Longking supplies Ozone Generators System for Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant in Spain

Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant (Bilbao, Spain): Two-Stage Ozonation (Pre + Intermediate) with LOX-Fed NLO Ozone Generators (2 × 20 kg/h)

Newland EnTech Europe - ETAP Venta Alta Generadores Ozono - Ozone Generators DWP Venta Alta - 2 x 20 kg/h

Longking EnTech Europe (formerly Newland EnTech Europe) was awarded the supply of an ozonation system for the Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant in Bilbao (Spain) for the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium.

The objective is to implement a two-stage ozonation strategypre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation—to strengthen the plant’s multi-barrier treatment approach and support compliance with evolving drinking water quality requirements (EU Directive 2020/2184).

Plant capacity: up to or 7 m³/s
(Choose the correct figure based on the client/project documentation and use it consistently across your site.)

At a glance

  • Application: Municipal drinking water treatment (two-stage ozonation)

  • Ozone production: 2 × 20 kg/h (total 40 kg/h)

  • Oxygen supply: Liquid Oxygen (LOX) feed gas

  • Ozone generators: NLO Series (high-efficiency platform)

  • Pre-ozonation: 6 high-efficiency injector systems across two ozone lines

  • Intermediate ozonation: porous dome-type diffusers (upstream of activated carbon)

  • Design focus: energy optimization, safe operation, and operator protection

Why two-stage ozonation in modern drinking water plants

Two-stage ozonation is a strong engineering choice when plants want both:

  • front-end oxidation benefits (process resilience, water quality stabilization), and

  • targeted intermediate oxidation before polishing steps such as activated carbon, supporting a robust multi-barrier concept.

In practice, the value of ozonation is determined by system design (stable production + effective transfer + control discipline), not only by nameplate capacity.

Ozone generation plant — 40 kg/h from LOX (NLO Series)

The ozonation plant is designed to operate with LOX supply, providing a stable oxygen feed for ozone generation and consistent system performance.

The system consists of two NLO Series ozone generators, each rated at 20 kg/h. The NLO platform is engineered for demanding municipal applications where operators require:

  • stable ozone production and controllability,

  • robust safety design (including dielectric protection measures), and

  • an energy consumption optimization approach aligned with lifecycle OPEX targets.

Energy optimization and operational control

Each ozone generator includes an integrated control strategy designed to optimize energy consumption while maintaining the process demand required by the treatment line.

For municipal assets, this is essential: stable performance and disciplined control reduce operating variability and support predictable outcomes over time.

Thermal management — closed-circuit cooling

To protect long-term durability and stable operation, heat dissipation in the ozone generators is managed through closed-circuit cooling systems.

In high-duty municipal service, thermal stability is a key contributor to reliability and consistent output.

Ozone transfer to water — two injection concepts for two process points

Pre-ozonation: high-efficiency injector systems

For the pre-ozonation stage, the project includes six high-efficiency injector systems distributed across the two ozone lines, designed to promote strong initial oxidation performance at the plant inlet.

Intermediate ozonation: porous dome-type diffusers (before activated carbon)

In the intermediate ozonation stage—installed upstream of activated carbon—ozone is transferred using high-efficiency dome-type porous diffusers, supporting effective gas dispersion and contact.

This two-point strategy (injectors + diffusers) allows the plant to apply ozone where it brings the most benefit across the treatment train.

Safety-by-design for operators and plant integrity

Ozonation requires a rigorous safety approach. The installation will be equipped with modern protection systems to support safe operation, including plant interlocks and operator-focused safety measures (site configuration dependent).

A reference project for utility-scale drinking water ozonation in Spain

Venta Alta is a strong reference because it combines:

  • two-stage ozonation (pre + intermediate),

  • LOX-fed ozone generation,

  • and a proven injection architecture matched to each process point.

It demonstrates Longking EnTech Europe’s capability to deliver engineered ozonation solutions for municipal drinking water treatment—focused on safety, controllability, and lifecycle performance.
