What ozone system was commissioned at the Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant?
Longking EnTech Europe commissioned a 40 kg/h ozone generation system at the Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant in Bilbao, Spain, operated by the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia (CABB). The installation supports the plant’s drinking water treatment process through pre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation stages.
The system uses Longking NLO Series ozone generators, designed for large municipal and industrial applications where high ozone production capacity, process control and reliable integration with the treatment plant are required.
What is the capacity and configuration of the Venta Alta ozone system?
The Venta Alta installation is based on Longking’s NLO 2nd Generation ozone technology and provides a total installed ozone production capacity of 40 kg O₃/h.
Main system configuration
2 × 20 kg O₃/h oxygen-fed ozone generators
High-concentration ozone operation
Specific energy consumption below 7 kWh/kg O₃
Injector-based ozone transfer for the pre-ozonation stage
Microbubble diffusion for the intermediate ozonation stage
The two ozonation stages use different gas–liquid contact approaches according to their role in the treatment process. Together, the system provides the plant with flexible ozone production and a total installed capacity of 40 kg O₃/h.
What role does ozone play in the Venta Alta drinking water treatment process?
At Venta Alta, ozone is applied in both pre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation stages. These stages are integrated into the overall drinking water treatment train and should be understood as process barriers rather than as isolated equipment.
Typical objectives of pre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation
In drinking water treatment, these stages can contribute to:
Oxidation of selected organic compounds and micropollutant precursors.
Control of compounds associated with taste and odour.
Modification of natural organic matter before downstream treatment.
Improvement of overall treatment robustness when ozone is correctly integrated with filtration and subsequent disinfection stages.
The actual performance of each ozonation stage depends on raw water quality, ozone demand, applied dose, contact conditions and the downstream treatment process. For this reason, removal efficiencies and treatment outcomes should be assessed on a project-specific basis rather than assumed from ozone production capacity alone.
How is the Venta Alta ozone system monitored and controlled?
The Venta Alta ozone system is integrated into the plant’s existing automation and SCADA architecture, allowing the ozonation process to operate as part of the overall drinking water treatment control strategy.
Main control and monitoring functions
Real-time monitoring of relevant process parameters, including ozone dosage, ORP and off-gas.
Automatic adjustment of ozone production based on process signals and operating requirements.
Integration of alarms, interlocks and operating status into the plant control system.
Automated start-up and shutdown sequences to support safe and repeatable operation.
This integration allows operators to monitor the ozonation stages continuously and adjust operation according to actual treatment conditions, rather than operating the ozone generators as isolated equipment.
Why is the Venta Alta ozone project technically relevant?
The Venta Alta project combines 40 kg O₃/h of installed production capacity, oxygen-fed NLO generators and two different ozone application stages within an operating drinking water treatment plant.
Its relevance lies not only in ozone production capacity, but in the integration of generation, gas–liquid transfer, process monitoring and plant automation into a single treatment strategy. The project illustrates how large-scale ozonation can be engineered around the specific requirements of pre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation rather than treating ozone generation as an isolated process.
The installation also demonstrates the application of Longking’s NLO technology in a European municipal drinking water plant, complementing the Group’s broader international experience in large-scale ozone systems.
How was the Venta Alta ozone system integrated and commissioned?
The Venta Alta project was delivered for the FERROVIAL-CADAGUA UTE, with the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia (CABB) as the water utility and end user of the installation.
The new ozone system had to be integrated into an existing drinking water treatment process, including two different ozonation stages and the plant’s automation and control architecture.
Key project integration requirements
Integration of the ozone generation system with the existing drinking water treatment line.
Coordination of the pre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation stages.
Connection with the plant automation and SCADA system.
Functional testing and commissioning of the complete ozone installation.
Verification of operating sequences, alarms and safety interlocks.
The Venta Alta project is a practical example of how Longking combines ozone generation technology with process integration, automation and commissioning for large municipal drinking water applications.
