Longking EnTech Europe to Supply Open Channel UV System for Villafranca de los Barros WWTP

Longking EnTech Europe to Supply an Open Channel UV Disinfection System for the Villafranca de los Barros WWTP

A strategic step in the consolidation of Longking UV technology for the European wastewater market

Longking EnTech Europe has been awarded the contract to supply an open channel ultraviolet disinfection system for the Villafranca de los Barros Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Badajoz, Spain.

The project represents a strategic step for the company in the European municipal wastewater treatment market, incorporating a Longking NLQ-H UV solution into an urban wastewater treatment plant application. This award strengthens Longking EnTech Europe’s position in advanced water disinfection technologies and highlights the potential of open channel UV systems as an efficient, modular and sustainable solution for treated wastewater effluent disinfection.

Longking NLQ-32 H: horizontal open channel UV technology

The selected solution is a Longking NLQ-32 H system, designed for UV disinfection of treated wastewater in an open channel configuration.

The final system design is prepared for two UV channels and a total of 32 low-pressure amalgam UV lamps rated at 320 W each. The first installation phase will include one UV channel equipped with 16 lamps, while the system will remain ready for its complete future expansion.

Developed for municipal wastewater treatment applications, the Longking NLQ-H series combines high disinfection performance with operational flexibility, making it particularly suitable for tertiary treatment processes requiring reliable and chemical-free effluent disinfection.

Its modular architecture, robust mechanical design and advanced control capabilities provide an efficient solution for wastewater treatment plants seeking long-term reliability, simplified maintenance and energy-efficient operation.

Designed from the beginning for future expansion

One of the key technical aspects of the supply is that both the control panel and the ballast cabinet will be delivered prepared, wired and programmed for the complete final configuration of the system.

This provides a clear operational advantage for the client: the future expansion of the UV system can be carried out without redesigning the electrical and control architecture. As a result, the upgrade process will be simpler, more orderly and less disruptive for the existing installation.

Modularity is one of the main strengths of Longking NLQ-H open channel UV systems. In this project, modularity is not limited to the number of UV lamps or channels; it is integrated from the initial design of the electrical system, automation architecture and long-term operation strategy.

Chemical-free disinfection of treated wastewater effluent

The Longking UV system will enable the disinfection of treated wastewater effluent without chemical dosing. Ultraviolet radiation acts directly on microorganisms present in the water, inactivating them through a controlled UV dose.

This approach eliminates the need for storage, handling and dosing of chemical disinfectants and avoids the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products typically associated with conventional chlorination processes.

For municipal wastewater treatment plants, open channel UV technology is particularly suitable when the objective is to achieve reliable effluent disinfection, continuous operation and compatibility with tertiary treatment schemes.

Automatic control, UV monitoring and quartz sleeve cleaning

The supplied system includes automatic operation control, UV monitoring through dedicated sensors and an automatic quartz sleeve cleaning system.

These elements are essential to maintain stable disinfection performance over time. In wastewater applications, fouling, scaling or the accumulation of organic matter on the quartz sleeves can reduce the transmission of UV radiation into the water. The automatic cleaning system helps maintain efficient UV transmission while reducing manual maintenance requirements.

UV sensors provide continuous monitoring of system performance and allow operation to be adapted to the actual conditions of the treated effluent. This is especially relevant in wastewater treatment plants where flow rate, water quality and UV transmittance may vary during operation.

Hydraulic control with a fixed AISI 316 stainless steel weir

The scope of supply also includes a fixed weir manufactured in AISI 316 stainless steel, a key component for maintaining the correct hydraulic conditions inside the UV channel.

In open channel UV disinfection systems, channel hydraulics have a direct impact on treatment performance. Maintaining a stable water level and an appropriate flow distribution is essential to ensure that the effluent receives the required UV dose under the design conditions.

The integration of the fixed weir helps control the operating water level in the channel and supports homogeneous exposure of the water to ultraviolet radiation, contributing to the overall reliability of the disinfection process.

A modular UV solution for municipal wastewater treatment plants

The NLQ-H configuration selected for the Villafranca de los Barros WWTP combines several technical advantages that are especially relevant for municipal wastewater treatment applications:

  • Open channel UV disinfection without chemical dosing.

  • Horizontal UV technology with low-pressure amalgam lamps.

  • Modular configuration by channels and number of lamps.

  • System prepared for future expansion.

  • Automatic control and UV intensity monitoring.

  • Automatic quartz sleeve cleaning.

  • Hydraulic integration with a fixed AISI 316 stainless steel weir.

  • Simplified operation and maintenance.

This approach enables the implementation of a first phase aligned with the current needs of the plant, while preserving the possibility of future capacity expansion without compromising the original technical architecture.
