High-Efficiency Ozone System at Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant in Bilbao | Longking EnTech Europe

High-Efficiency Ozone System Commissioned at the Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant in Bilbao

Drinking water treatment and ozone technology

Longking EnTech Europe has commissioned a next-generation ozone treatment system at the Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant (Bilbao, Spain), operated by the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia (CABB). The drinking water facility treats 3 m³/s and now incorporates a high-efficiency ozone system to reinforce both pre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation stages in the treatment line.

Ozone system architecture and capacity

The new ozone installation is based on the NLO 2nd Generation platform and integrates:

  • Two oxygen-fed ozone generators, each with a capacity of 20 kg/h.

  • Operation at high ozone concentration to improve oxidation efficiency and reduce specific energy consumption.

  • A dual-stage configuration, combining injector-based pre-ozonation with micro-bubble diffusion for the intermediate ozonation stage, designed to maximise mass transfer and CT values.

This advanced architecture delivers specific energy consumption below 7 kW/kg O₃, setting a benchmark in European drinking water ozonation and supporting utilities that seek lower operational costs and improved process sustainability.

Process objectives: water quality and advanced oxidation

The ozone system at Venta Alta has been engineered to enhance several key aspects of drinking water quality and advanced oxidation performance:

  • Oxidation of natural organic matter and micropollutant precursors.

  • Improvement of taste and odour parameters ahead of filtration.

  • Enhanced removal of colour and turbidity precursors.

  • Strengthened disinfection synergy, improving downstream filter and disinfection stability.

By combining high-concentration ozone generation, efficient gas–liquid contact and continuous monitoring, the system increases the robustness of the potable water treatment train and supports long-term compliance with stringent quality standards.

Automation, monitoring and operational safety

The ozone generators and diffusion systems are fully integrated into the plant’s existing automation and SCADA architecture. Key design elements include:

  • Real-time monitoring of ORP, ozone dosage and off-gas.

  • Automatic ozone dose control with feedback from process sensors.

  • Safe start-up and shutdown sequences, embedded in the control logic.

This level of automation allows operators at the Venta Alta Drinking Water Plant to maintain stable oxidation conditions while optimising energy use and guaranteeing safe handling of residual ozone.

Statement from Longking EnTech Europe

“The implementation of NLO 2nd Generation ozone generators at Venta Alta sets a new technical benchmark in drinking water ozonation, achieving energy consumptions below 7 kW/kg O₃ while enabling highly efficient pre-ozonation and intermediate ozonation. This strengthens overall treatment reliability and oxidation performance,” said Javier Ezquerra, General Manager of Longking EnTech Europe.

Collaboration with CABB and project delivery

The project has been executed in close collaboration with CABB, ensuring:

  • Correct integration of the ozone system into the existing drinking water treatment line.

  • Compliance with plant operating protocols and safety requirements.

  • Full commissioning support, including configuration, functional testing and optimisation.

  • Operator training and technical assistance from Longking EnTech Europe.

With this installation, Longking EnTech Europe reinforces its position as a technology partner for drinking water utilities looking to upgrade their ozone systems and implement advanced oxidation processes with high energy efficiency and robust process control.

At Longking EnTech Europe, specialists in ozone technologies and water treatment processes, we help integrate ozone wherever it delivers the most value: as a primary oxidant, intermediate barrier, or final disinfectant—always tailored to the goals of each plant.

Because true water safety doesn’t lie in a single control point, but in the strength of the entire system.
